CHAPS Newsletter No. 4

Dec 2014

Dear Supporter I had intended to write this newsletter in June but such has been our level of activity that the time has flown by. We are now just over halfway through our two year Big Lottery Fund grant programme and have so far this year staged three major healthcare events and contributed to or attended a further ten from Southend to Kings Lynn and Colchester to London! Our major events have been at the Colchester United Stadium in March, Southend United in May and Newmarket Racecourse with Enable East in June. At these we have provided aortic aneurysm screening, heart and stroke risk assessments and prostate cancer screening plus various other checks such as for skin cancer, mouth cancer, diabetes and blood pressure. So far we have performed checks for 601 men and provided "awareness information" to a further 317. At Colchester alone 315 men came for tests! We cannot stage events without great support and, as well as the staff at the various stadia, our particular thanks go to the Essex, Southend and Cambridge NHS Aortic Aneurysm screening teams, ably supported by Drs Nagendra Thayur and Mohammed Al-Dabbagh from The Oaks Hospital in Colchester. The heart and stroke risk assessments have been performed by Anglian Community Enterprise nurses and Day Lewis Pharmacy staff. Our remaining health events this year are at Ipswich Town Football Club on 16/10/14 and the Clacton Lions Day at Sam's Hall on 13/11/14 where all our core tests will be available. Doors open at 10.00 am but if you wish to book appointments, contact CHAPS at or ring 07734 747854. The Ipswich event will be followed by a Gala Charity Dinner in the Sir Bobby Robson Suite, hosted by ITFC's Simon Milton and featuring top comic Ian Irving supported by other Ipswich "Legends". Book as above. CHAPS has been invited by project managers Enable East, in Partnership with Big Lottery, to extend our activities to the East Midlands where we hope to engage another football club and will then be holding a national Men's Health Conference at the FA's new elite facility at St George's Park, Burton upon Trent on 29/6/15. Next year we are again planning events at the Colchester and Southend United grounds and new events in Basildon and at the Essex County Cricket Club in Chelmsford. We will also be holding a Parliamentary Reception kindly sponsored by our Vice President MPs Douglas Carswell, Bernard Jenkin, Priti Patel and Sir Bob Russell. We have busy times ahead but this only goes to confirm the need for a Men's Health Charity campaigning for better services. As ever, thank you so much for your support.
