CHAPS Newsletter No. 7

December 2016

Welcome to our newsletter for 2016 - a transformational year for CHAPS.

With the ending of our Big Lottery funding in 2015 we concentrated activity in Essex and Suffolk. Despite much reduced funding we increased the number of local men's health events and reprinted a much enlarged and improved edition of our Men's Health Booklet.

We ran screening events at the Colchester Utd Stadium, Southend Fire Station, Chelmsford's Marconi Club, Harwich Football Club, Ipswich Town FC and at Clacton Voluntary Services. Four of these events marked new collaborations: with the Fire Service in Southend, Ramsay Healthcare's Springfield Hospital in Chelmsford, The Harwich & District Fellowship for the Sick and the Rotary Club of Clacton on Sea. To them we owe a debt of gratitude for their efforts and funding, without which the events would not have occurred.

At the six events we performed 390 Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm scans, 371 NHS cardiovascular checks, 464 Prostate Cancer (PSA) tests, screened 294 men for Diabetes and 228 for Skin Cancers, did 80 Physiotherapy Consultations and 122 Hearing Tests, totalling 1,949 tests for 612 men.

We are grateful to all our clinical collaborators and an important contribution to the success of these events has come with facilitation and support from Essex County Councillors and the Commissioners of Public Health Essex. We hope to build on this in 2017.

In 2016 we affiliated to The Suffolk and Essex Football Associations and are developing a relationship with Rotary in Essex (District 1240) and the Freemasons in Suffolk, for whom we will be providing prostate cancer screening at three venues across the county in 2017. We also hope to stage more events at Fire Stations in South and West Essex, funds permitting.

Nationally we have been working with the Graham Fulford Foundation and the National Federation of Prostate Cancer Support Groups to guide policy and promote prostate cancer screening across the UK including having articles published in the Government Gazette on Prostate Cancer Screening.

Sincere thanks to supporters of our fundraising events, contributors to our website's "Supporters Wall" and especially to our major donors and sponsors: Ellisons Solicitors, NEEB Holdings, the East of England Co-op, Ramsay Healthcare, Business Connected, The Suffolk Nuffield Hospital, Chris Chitticks' rock concerts, Sheila Harrison, the former Rotary Club of Clacton Jubilee and a special thank you to Cloud fm Group for their donation of £7,000 raised at their Christmas party! We also welcome for 2017 new donors Gipping Construction, The Charity Classic Vehicles Club and Brett Vale Golf Club Seniors.

Once again, thank you all for your vital support and best wishes for 2017.
